I encounter some CEOs who are true masters of their trade, but who are resistant to opening their horizons to other things that do not involve the rational analysis of their work.
They try to convince me that their emotions are only useful when it is about their loved ones, with their families and partners, but that in the office we are only here to bring results. For that same reason and in their view our emotions are better left at home.
I always tell them, that reasoning, the analysis of facts and data give you crucial information. They serve to take decisions and to manage but in order…
To lead, inspire, transform and motivate just relying on your rationality is not enough!
The connection between people and managing a team requires an understanding of our emotional language.
Emotions shed light onto the situations we live through, and in many cases, they are the inevitable lever for some of the most essential aspects of an organization…
- Trust…
Trust in the leader, in our colleagues… in the future, in that we are capable of overcoming challenges.
- Passion…
Passion for what we do, to satify our clients, for excellence.
- Frustration…
Frustration when we do not achieve results, when a proposal is not accepted, when we lose a client.
- Empathy…
The ability to connect with others, with our peer, with our client to understand their situation and to support them in difficult moments.
How can we pretend to lead people without understanding those fundamental aspects of our human nature?
In regards to anything that has to do with people, not considering the role our emotions play can seriously limit you as a leader. You need to include into the equation not only the rational aspects, but also emotions, your own emotions and those of others.
I understand perfectly well the challenge. For some, our emotions can be an unknown language and when placed in front of them you feel outside of your comfort zone. But that is why we are here to support you.
Always remember: handling emotions will makes you stronger.
Emotional intelligence is one form of intelligence.
Do you want to develop your intelligence or are you going to let yourself be limited by what you already have?
